40 Years of the Museum, 40 Years of Magic
Four decades of activities deserve to be celebrated ! As the museum marks its 40th anniversary, however, its president and founder, Jean Paul Barbier-Mueller, has just passed away. He was so looking forward to seeing the many events we had planned play out over the year 2017. To show respect for his memory and his commitment, we will pay tribute to him by celebrating this anniversary in an even more spectacular manner !
A second milestone will also be observed in 2017 : the 110th anniversary of the Barbier-Mueller collection. Indeed, Josef Mueller, one of the greatest discoverers of modern and primitive art in the first half of the twentieth century, acquired his first works in 1907.
The festivities celebrating this anniversary will centre around three key sites throughout the year :
- An exhibition outside the Museum’s walls in a selection of eighteen Swiss and four French museums from January 2017 on.
- The exhibition Six Thousand Years of Receptacles: Tableware through the Ages at the Musée Barbier-Mueller from 17 May 2017.
- The exhibition The Barbier-Mueller Collections: A Hundred-Year-Old Passion at the Biennial Antiques Fair at Grand Palais, in Paris, dans le cadre de la Biennale des Antiquaires, du 12 au 18 septembre 2017
Through all these events, the Musée Barbier-Mueller sincerely wishes to promote collaboration with the partner institutions and to reach out to new audiences. Isn’t an anniversary celebrated with joy, sharing and dialogue, even in the absence of the man who has just bowed out ?
