Housepost. Uki or (Ugi), Eastern Solomon Islands. Wood. H. 163.8 cm. Inv. 4500-D. Photo Studio Diane Bouchet Photographies.

This wooden housepost from the Solomon Islands was allegedly collected from the Solomons by Jack London and his wife Charmian on their voyage on the ship "Snark" in 1908. According to the log of the "Snark", the couple obtained eight houseposts on Uki Island on 4th July 1908.

Two sharks, pointing upward, are carved in low relief on the sides of the post terminating in a three-dimensional seated male figure. This combination of images - anthropomorphic figure seated above or, in some cases, on the jaws of the fish - represents a typical theme rendered on posts once carved to support the roofs of canoe or custom houses in the eastern Solomon Islands.
